ABOUT AVENTURAS
A Language and Cultural Immersion Program Consultancy

In 1981, in between years of graduate study in social work, we traveled to Mexico to study and learn Spanish in an intensive Spanish language immersion school. We knew then that acquisition of the Spanish language and knowledge of Mexican and Latin culture would be important to us in building cultural and language competency in our profession working as clinical social workers with mental health clients in California. We knew that with most of our clientele speaking Spanish was important. We traveled to Cuernavaca, Mexico, in the state of Morelos. We learned  that this was one of the two world centers for the study of the Spanish language. Upon arrival in Cuernavaca, we began our research of the many schools there. We now work with other well-known Spanish immersion schools in other Latin American countries and in Spain. The information available in this brochure is on the popular Argentinian school, ILEE, with campuses in Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Patagonia.

We started AVENTURAS: Educational Travel Adventures out of our love for Latin America, her people and a desire to help bring increased Spanish language skills and cultural competency to the services that many people need in their employment setting today. The students that we send down and take down in group trips with us come from many different backgrounds. Some are Social Workers, Mental Health Therapists, Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, Embassy Diplomates, Government Employees, Education Professionals, Priests and other Clergy, Nuns, Ministers, Business Executives and Professionals, Medical Students, Law Students, Social Work Students and other College Students, Retirees, and other Latin America-lovers that just want to be able to speak better when they travel. Many of our students are Latinos who either want to learn the language for themselves, fine-tune some aspect of grammar, or expose their children to the culture and the language in a more intense way. Many students  have traveled with their families who study with them. Some students feel more comfortable traveling in a group so we have enjoyed setting up these experiences as well. We look forward to many more "AVENTURAS" ourselves.

METHOD AND MATERIALS FOR OUR SPANISH COURSES

Methodology
Argentina I.L.E.E. is one of the first schools of Spanish for foreigners in Argentina and has a permanent staff of professors with a high level of specialization and a maximum degree of coordination. Also, the teaching staff is constantly supervised by a pedagogical coordinator. This allows the educational system of Argentina I.L.E.E.Spanish Schools  to offer a solid internal structure that accompanies the learning process of students of all levels.

The system of initial evaluation and the constant supervision of each student assures the adjustment of the course to the needs of each of the students of our schools. Further more, the reduced groups allow a maximum attention to the difficulties as well as the progress of each one of the members.

The methodology developed by Argentina I.L.E.E. Spanish Schools throughout all these years of successful permanence in the market has resulted in an excellent combination of grammar and communicative contents. This way, the student acquires the tools needed to express himself correctly in the communicative situations corresponding to each level.

Argentina I.L.E.E. Spanish Schools count on own material, designed that the student enters progressive understanding of the Spanish grammar and its uses in the speech. From the first classes the student will already count on correct grammar knowledge to present himself, to request and to give information, to make purchases, reservations, etc.

In the classes, grammar contents are introduced and put into practice through listening comprehension and role plays as well as written exercises. Thus, starting off with the correct use of the language, the student will be able to actively participate speaking and listening outside the school. We consider that the understanding of the grammar is an essential tool, that enables the student to express himself correctly, according to his level.

Argentina I.L.E.E. Spanish Schools have established different levels (see detailed information) taking into account the grammar contents that each student can learn appropriately, and according to his initial level, in the hours considered for each level. Only a long trajectory in the education of the Spanish language in Argentina could allow a structure of this kind, assuring our students a successful and solid learning of the language.

Although from the first levels informative material is used for the student to gain a progressive understanding of the cultural context, it is from the intermediate level I that journalistic or historical texts, as well as those concerning the way of life in our country, are included as a daily activity. This way the vocabulary is extended, linguistic interchanges between the students are generated and cultural and historical contents are deepened. Also, the cultural activities suggested by the school are offered with the purpose of assisting the student to acquire an integral understanding of the Argentine social cultural development.

In levels intermediate III and advanced I and II, the students participate in more formal communicative situations, in which, as it is done when studying history and literature, they have interviews, take notes during lectures, expose a subject to their classmates, work with audio and video material of different degrees of complexity and of thematic diversity. The material used for advanced levels is selected from what is of current use for a native Argentinian with a university degree or superior education.

Argentina I.L.E.E. Spanish Schools offer specific programs for advanced levels, that integrate history, art and literature; programs specially composed for a deep and successful immersion in the Argentine culture. Ask for our Medicine Spanish Program.

Social-Cultural Activities Program

Argentina I.L.E.E. Spanish Schools ' social-cultural activities are organized by Barbara. She is a young tour guide
with vast experience in guiding groups. The tours can be considered useful not only to get to know the city of Buenos
Aires, but also as another aspect of the communicative situation in which the students can put into practice the skills acquired in classes and widen their vocabulary.

La Boca
Did you know that Argentina is a country that has grown demographically due to important migratory flows in the 19th century? The neighborhood of "La Boca" was built abound the first harbor of the city of Buenos Aires. Many of the Italian immigrants settled near the docks between 1880 and 1930. The history of this recent past is at plain sight in the streets of La Boca, in the color of its houses, in its museums and also in the Boca Juniors soccer stadium, one of the most popular teams of Argentina..

San Telmo
San Telmo is Buenos Aires´ oldest neighborhood. A walk along its streets will reveal the historical heritage from colonial times up to the beginning of the 20th century. How did our customs evolve? Which were yesterday´s styles? You will learn to distinguish styles and discover the changes. You will be able to visit antique shops and the famous market at Dorrego Plaza, the historical heart of the neighborhood. San Telmo, historical patrimony of the city, is where most of the "tanguerías" (Tango Restaurants/bars) and "casonas" (old-fashioned restaurants) from last century, can be found.

Yesterday and today
Argentina and the immigration are closely related. The neighborhood of Retiro is clear proof of this. The harbor, the railroad and the old Immigrants Hotel which are in the area will help us explain why they are such an important part of our history. We can also explain what the city was like in the 18th century and from the San Martin Plaza, help you imagine the open field that was there until the middle of the 19th century and find out why the army´s soldiers trained there. Today this Plaza also preserves the memory of the most recent history in the commemorative monument to the War of Malvinas.

Palermo chico
French architecture in Buenos Aires

Did you know that Argentina was a very rich country at the beginning of the 20th century? You will find out through the splendid residences of this neighborhood, the way of life of the aristocracy of Buenos Aires with fortunes based on the exploitation of the field. In the neighborhood of Palermo Chico you will observe how the French architecture gradually replaced the colonial Spanish past. We will explain why these mansions of the Argentine elite are today headquarters of embassies and consular representations.

Recoleta
Art, history and leisure: Recoleta offers all of this and much more. It is the place where young people meet. In the residential neighborhood of Recoleta is the Church of Our Lady of Pilar ("Nuestra Señora del Pilar"), a splendid and rare example of colonial architecture. The former cloisters of the convent are today a museum and cultural center. Craftsmen and street artists gather in the square. In the landscape of the neighborhood the museums of art coexist with the most sophisticated restaurants, cafés and discos.

Maradona and Boca Junior: A "love story"
Surely you know them: Diego Armando Maradona, the most famous soccer player of Argentina and Boca, the most popular soccer team in this country. They signify together a great sport passion. This story can be found in the Soccer Museum related with the historic, social and political development of Argentina and the world. Did you know that the Boca stadium is called "La Bombonera" (The Chocolate box)? We will explain this as well.

Do you know Evita?
The woman, the stateswoman, the "descamisada". Even today, Eva Perón has a mythical stature. The power and the magnetism of her figure have provoked enduring feelings of love and hatred. Nobody can deny the force and the fascination that her name still brings about. We will help you to understand this phenomenon better, to know more about Evita, in a tour where public documents are

Tango Circuit
Tango, its music and its dance, is known today around the world. Yes,
tango is a part of the city of Buenos Aires. In its origin it was danced in
the brothels of the poor neighbourhoods because it was considered to be
scandalous. But little by little it gained a space in the ballrooms of the
centre of the city reaching the most elegant neighbourhoods. The tango
circuit will help you discover a story that is written in the streets of our
city.
